Classifying Rocks
Directions: You are responsible for researching your type of rock. Use the graphic organizer to record the correct information about your type of rock. You will be creating a poster later in the week that includes the most important information about your type of rock. Have fun!
Sedimentary Rocks
![Picture](/uploads/5/1/2/8/5128959/3139.png)
How they are created?
They are formed from small particles of rock and other materials. Running water carries the small particles and other materials to a place where they are dropped off and they then form a rock over time.
Where were they created?
Most sedimentary rocks were formed in ancient shallow waters and seas.
What do they look like?
They have rounded rock particles inside of the larger rock. They are layered and have many types of materials inside of the larger rock.

Shale- It is formed by clay that was put in deep, quiet waters. It is usually red, brown, or gray. It has a wet muddy smell. You can see the layers in shale very easily.

Sandstone- It is formed by sand that was put near a beach where there are a lot of waves. It is rough and grainy. Sometimes it has fossils. You can see the grains of sand inside of it.

Conglomerate- rock materials, pebbles, and other materials that are glued together.
Metamorphic Rocks
![Picture](/uploads/5/1/2/8/5128959/6277215.png?306)
How they are created?
These rocks that have been changed by heat and pressure. The heat comes from volcanoes and hot rocks under the Earth's surface.
Where were they created?
Metamorphic rocks are created below the Earth's surface.
What do they look like?
Metamorphic rocks are layered and they might have crystals inside of them.

Marble- Large crystal rock formed from limestone. It can be pink, red, yellow, brown, green or black.

Gneiss- It sounds like "nice." It has parallel bands of minerals in it. It is formed from different rocks. It feels rough to the touch.

Schist- It is formed from shale. It has layers and it is shiny.
Igneous Rocks
![Picture](/uploads/5/1/2/8/5128959/7598429.png?299)
How they are created?
They were formed when melted rock from deep inside of the Earth rises and cools.
Where were they created?
Igneous rocks are formed below the surface of the Earth. Or they could be formed on the surface of the Earth.
What do they look like?
Igneous rocks formed below the earth's surface cool slowly and they have large crystals or holes from air bubbles.
Igneous rocks formed below the Earth's surface cool quickly and they have small crystals or holes from air bubbles.

Obsidian- glass formed from rapidly cooled lava. It has sharp edges. It was used for arrowheads.

Pumice- is hardened lava. The lava had gas bubbles so the rock has holes. It looks like honeycomb. Pumice floats in water.

Basalt- It is a dark colored rock. It has small grains. It is very common.
